Adoption Process

At Humble Hounds, we want you to find a new family member and we want our rescue animals to find their forever home. There is no cost to apply. An application does not obligate or limit you to adopting the animal listed on the application.

Applications are carefully considered and processed. After submission, we will contact you to conduct an interview where together we will assess your needs and work to find the right match. We speak to veterinary references, landlords, and personal references before approving an application.

Our adoption process generally takes a week or less. If you are not prepared to bring a dog home within a week’s time of applying, please wait until you are ready.

Veterinary Reference

Please contact your vet’s office to grant them permission to speak to us.

If you have owned a dog or cat in the past 5 years, we require a veterinary reference. The purpose of this reference is to confirm the veterinary care provided to the pet(s) you currently or previously owned, so please provide the name and phone number of the veterinarian who has treated your pets. At a minimum, we expect that any current pets in the household have been spayed/neutered and are up to date with vaccinations.

Landlord Reference

If you do not own your home, we will need to speak to your landlord to confirm you can have pets and discuss any pet restrictions on your lease. Adults living in a home owned by their parents will need to list their parents as landlords. We highly recommend reviewing your lease and/or speaking to your landlord about your plans to adopt a pet in advance; that way you will be aware of any restrictions and any fees that may be imposed in your lease.

Personal References

We require you provide at least three personal references.  Immediate family members will not be considered as personal references. Please confirm the phone numbers provided are accurate. Kindly notify your references in advance to let them know we will be contacting them and to return our call, if necessary.

Virtual Interview

Once you’ve received your application approval email, we will schedule a call. This call is to go over your plan for bringing home a new dog and then review the rest of our adoption process. At the end of the call, we will discuss the steps moving forward and schedule a date and time to meet/adopt your new dog.

Adoption Day

  • If adopters have existing dogs, the existing and adoptable dogs will be required to do a "meet and greet" before taking the adoptable dog home.
  • Adopters must complete and sign adoption contracts.
  • All Adopters must complete and sign a Training & Commitment Contract which will require each adopter to research local dog trainers they would use if/when needed.
  • All adopters must commit to the 3-3-3 Rule as a minimum guideline for rescue dog adjustment which can be found under our Adoption Resources page.

Adoption Fees

0-9 months $400

9 months - 6 years $300

6+ years $200

Adoption fees help cover the costs of care (veterinary, food, transportation, etc.) of our dogs while they are waiting to find their forever families.
